Christina Perry: Jar of Hearts

This song is two years old. This review is a little late.

Good, we established that.

Christina Perry: Jar of Hearts
So the only thing that strikes me in this song, other than the biting and emotional lyrics, the mostly beautiful singing, and the impressive interpretive dancing in the music video, is the really annoying "who do you think you are?". You know what I'm talking about.

The piece shows off Christina's beautiful voice and her gorgeous pitch, but she falls a little when she sings the last lyric. Why does she choose to end the song with a let down? My only explanation is that she is trying to emulate the style "spoken word." It seems as if when she wrote it, she decided to make the ending of the song sound like she is speaking with pitch.

But other than the disappointing ending, the song has a beautiful and saddening message. How many of us feel that we can never get over a bad relationship but, after a while, we feel stronger because of our loss?

I would give this song 3 and a half stars.

Let me know what you think in the comments below.

  1. I disagree with your rating of 31/2 stars. I think that the Ending to this song is haunting, not a "let down" and the value of Christina Perri's "spoken word" style not only reflects the feeling of powerlessness she has but also very well utilizes something that is unique about her vocal style, she uses the natural breathiness of the higher portions of her range to create a memorable and individual sound to finish her piece with a style that is truly her own.

  2. Also, are you Rating on a for or five star basis?

    1. Anon: I'm rating on five stars. Also, I feel as if the ending is really her losing breath support. But I do see your point.

    2. I really don't think that in an age where any music label could easily edit out a singers lack of support with the push of a button to make it sound perfect that they would leave that tone in their if it wasn't intentional. They purposefully use the tone of breathlessness to highlight the intense exasperation and emotion that is being channeled in the song. Also sorry I was anonymous before I just figures out I could change the name.

    3. Maybe that was exasperation. But hey, that's why I asked for people to comment. My opinion is just that, an opinion. I won't always get it right according to everyone. But thanks.

  3. I feel this song is a very good song, and one of the pop culture songs I enjoy.
